Conservation Of Plants
The field of Plant Conservation includes the study of plant decline, its causes and techniques to conserve rare and endangered plants. Plant Conservation can be considered a part of Conservation Biology, a relatively younger field that emphasizes on the conservation of biodiversity and whole ecosystems.
Plants are the backbone of life on Earth. Today, however, plant communities around the world are under constant and relentless threat. Scientists estimate that at least 100,000 plants are threatened with extinction--that's more than one-third the total known species of plants on the planet!
The main threats to plants today are habitat destruction, invasive species, and over collection. The loss of a plant species can have devastating effects on ecosystems as a whole, as other species lose their sources of food and shelter. Additionally, plants play a vital role in stabilising soils and help prevent erosion.
We, at South City International School, have taken initiatives to help increase the awareness about plant diversity and need for it's conservation AND have included this topic as a project under International School Award under British Council.
